Schwepper (Velbert) : Maritime mortise locks

Ordering and correspondence

Tradition and quality

For 150 years Schwepper have made the best quality locks for yacht and shipbuilding. The locks are made in Velbert Germany entirely of brass and stainless steel and built to high standards to withstand maritime and rough conditions.

Repurposed for architectural use

We believe these are the best made and best proportioned locks available and so have configured a range of mortise locks equipped for architectural use. An excellent way to ensure only the highest grade materials and construction go into even the small details of traditional building.

Common details

All of the full size locks have the same case size. Lock handing is specified with the DIN standard, which can be understood in our resources and guidelines. The locks have a strong spring and the spring mechanics only operate in one direction, which makes the locks well suited to lever handles. We use the traditional and timeless older style GSV circle stamp on the faceplates, but they can also be supplied with no stamp if desired. We include a striking plate with each lock. We supply tin bronze slotted screws from Germany for the locks and striking plates, which are a somewhat different color than the brass, but harmonize nicely and provide an effect not completely unlike combining gunmetal and brass.

Five lever mortise lock

Traditional five lever lock with 360 differs on the key mechanism. Less common to see now in the United States, but still good and very smooth and solid in use. Multiple locks can be keyed to pass or differ. Two keys included.

"Due to the strength of materials employed in their construction, lever locks are fundamentally more secure and robust than pin-tumbler locks, but owing to their size, cost, and lack of modularity they have lost market share." (Pulford, 2007)
